"She's 22"

"She's 22"

Isabella is making a snow angel. Her sister, Trist, comes over. They’re in their late twenties or early thirties.

Trist: Lunch?

Isabella: What is it?

Trist: Tomato soup and grilled cheese like when we were kids.

Isabella: (sits up) Yeah. I’ll come in. Help me up.

Trist: How’s it going since you split up with your ex?

Isabella: “I’m holding on.” I can’t believe we were together for six years and then it just ended.

Trist: I know we haven’t caught up, but was it really that sudden?

Isabella: It feels like “a thing that’s wrong” because it really didn’t have a specific end for being such a long relationship. It got to a point where it felt like “we don’t belong” together and that was sudden.

Trist: Were you okay with his touring?

Isabella: I was. It was sad when he was gone for long stretches, but we figured out how to find time to vacation or for me to go to a couple of cities at a time. The thing that hurts the most is that he broke it off with me and then ended the whole relationship saying “‘but you like my songs and you make me happy.’” Did I really make you happy? I don’t even know. I do know he has some chick on Instagram in a lot of photos.

Trist: Wait, backup what?

Isabella: I want to ask him, “‘does she make you happy’ too?“

Trist: That sucks. You will bounce back, it may take some time, but you’re going to bounce back. First, stop checking social media.

Isabella: Thanks sis, but you have to say that.

Trist: I don’t have to say it. I mean “you can throw away” everything, but you could also listen to “every word I say” and get through this. What do you think?

Isabella: Let’s grab lunch.
