Music is Life. Writing is a journey. Together it creates Stories.

Scene 1

Elizabeth and James are best friends who have liked one another off and on. James is a musician and dresses as such. Elizabeth is trendy (whatever that looks like when this is performed.)

Elizabeth: (Laughing) James, “why do you always have to see the worst of it?”

James: I don’t mean to. It’s how I see the world. That’s why I write the songs I do.

Elizabeth: Okay then Mr. Sad Songs, “could you write me just one love song?”

James: No one would know it’s about you. Why do you want a love song anyway?

Elizabeth: “Put my name somewhere in the middle of it, it’s not hard to write” the name “Elizabeth.”

James: Whoa, whoa… how do you know I will do this for you?

Elizabeth: ”Just close your eyes boy and take your best guess.”

James: In love songs, I don’t find truth. I only hear sweet nothings.

Elizabeth: Like your approach to your actual love life?

James: That’s not what I’m saying.

Elizabeth: “The truth is hard, isn’t it?” You’ll write a love song so that when it’s out and I have my massive headphones on, “‘I’ll be listening in my favorite white dress.’” And I’ll know that it’s about me.

Scene 2

A few years has passed since the first scene. Elizabeth and James are in mostly opposite positions of love they were in previously.

James: “All these quiet afternoons” I think about all the loves I’ve given up in the past years. I’m glad that we’re finally getting together.

Elizabeth: “‘I wonder if I’ve given up my love too soon’” to be doing this again with you. How do I know that this time is actually the right time?

James crosses to her and brushes her face, as he does this “her hair [falls] from her curls,” but she flinches slightly as she’s not sure what’s going to happen or really what’s happening.

James: (Laughing, does not move back) I have to say “you’re pretty uptight for a Mexican Girl.” You have to trust me on this one. We’ve always been meant for one another.

Elizabeth: Why now? The thing is that “all your songs are sad songs” so that I’m not sure and even through our conversations that you know what love is.

James: You were the one to push me. You encouraged me to write love songs. I found so much love in the last few years. My career is because of you!

Elizabeth: “Why do you always make me feel like shit?”

James: How am I?

Elizabeth: Here’s the deal. “Could you write me just one love song? And put my name in the middle of it.”

James: Of course. I’ll even “call the song Elizabeth.”

Elizabeth: Then “all my friends will know that it’s about me!” You can’t do that.

James: You asked me once, “cause the truth is hard, isnt’ it?” and I pose that again to you. Let us love one another. Let me sing it from the rooftops or on stage. I have nothing to hide.

Elizabeth: What if I say no. What if this doesn’t work and I don’t want to simply wait and see for the umpteenth time.

James: You’re the only one who can ultimately choose. “Don’t take too long” (pause) “I just know you’ll come back to me.”
