"If the World Was Ending"

Three friends, Xandra, Yasmin, and Zhen are having dinner. There's a rumble, glasses are shaking, dishes fall in the distance. The friends drop down onto their hands and knees and go under the table covering their head and neck. This continues momentarily and then everything settles. Slowly, the three come back to their chairs and resume dinner, casually.

Zhen: Did you have these growing up, Yasmin?

Yasmin: Earthquakes? Yeah. Everyone on the west coast deals with them. Alaska has more earthquakes than California. 

Xandra: No way. 

Yasmin: Way!

Zhen: What did you do a few years back when we had the major one.

Xandra: "I was distracted" by the kids. It was bathtime and they started freaking out. There was a lot of water. Everywhere.

Yasmin: I was coming home from the office "and in traffic." Would you even believe "I didn't feel it" when it happened?

Xandra: There's too much happening on the roads. Zhen, where were you?

Zhen: "When the earthquake happened" I was breaking up with JP. 

Yasmin: That feels like yesterday and 5 years ago all at the same time. 

Zhen: You're telling me! That earthquake and everything that was happening "it really got me thinkin'." Why is it that all the things, really good or really bad happen at the same time? It never seems evenly dispersed.

Xandra: It would be too easy if it were any other way. Where did you guys break up anyway?

Yasmin: Let me guess. "Were you out drinkin'?"

Zhen: No!

Yasmin: "Were you in the living room?"

Zhen: Yep. "Chillin' watchin' television."

Xandra: Wasn't that hard?

Zhen: "It's been a year now" and I "think I've figured out how" to be. "How to let [it] go and communication die out."

Yasmin: What happened? Like "I know you know we know" but I've never heard you talk about it. 

Xandra: And if you're still not ready, you don't have to. 

Yasmin: Ditto. 

Zhen: We "weren't down for forever and it's fine" to talk about. So much has happened. 

Yasmin: So many earthquakes.

Zhen: Metaphorical and literal. "I know you know we know" but what happened to your last boo thang?

Yasmin: "We weren't meant for each other." 

Xandra: Oh Yaz. 

Yasmin: "And it's fine!" I wanted it to work more than he did. 

Xandra: I'm going to say it. I'm so lucky I don't have to date.

Zhen: Duh!! 

Xandra: But seriously. "If the world was ending you'd come over right?" You don't have to be alone. 

Yasmin: If we could get to your place. You live in the middle of the richest part of town. Some guard would make sure we don't make it down your street.

Zhen: Hopefully we don't have to worry about the world ending.
