It’s Friday night and Molly is in the kitchen making dinner for the family. Sarah comes downstairs and sits on a barstool. After a few moments of silence.

Molly: How was school this week?

Sarah: Fine.

Molly: “It’s not the way you talk” to me normally. Everything okay?

Sarah: Sure.

Molly: The school called “me.” They said that the new fad is kids jumping “off the roof.” You’re not doing that are you?

Sarah: No, those kids are stupid. What’s up with “your questions?” There are too many of them.

Molly: Well you’re acting weird and as your mom it’s my job to get “directions to the truth.” Your Dad is running late so you may be really late to Shel’s scary movie party.

Sarah: I don’t know if I want to go.

Molly: Uh oh. Is there trouble between you and Shel or someone else there?

Sarah: “It’s knowing that this can’t go on forever.”

Molly: What can’t go forever?

Sarah: I have a crush on Sy. He’ll be there.

Molly: It’s a boy-girl party? Well then that changes what we should talk about. Does he like you?

Sarah: I don’t know. Between him and me it’s “likely one of us will have to spend some days” in silence because we’re both really shy… I don’t want to be “alone” forever.

Molly: You’re a little young to worry about that.

Sarah: How can you say that Mom? “Maybe [he and I]’ll get forty years together.”

Molly: Sweetheart, you know that can’t be. “One day you’ll be gone” because

Molly and Sarah: ...because I won’t look any older. Or be any older.

Sarah: It’s not like he’ll suspect for years.

Molly: Suspect “if we were vampires and death was a joke?” We have to move in two years because your brother will hit that age.

Sarah: Why do I have to go be secluded with everyone too?

Molly: That’s another story. You can go tonight, but you have to help me finish the parmigiana and put it in the oven.
