"The Sound of Settling"

"The Sound of Settling"

A young woman, age 20, is sitting in a bedroom/dorm and writing a love letter to her long-time boyfriend with the hopes of a someday-forever scenario.

Young Woman: Dear Logan, “our youth is fleeting” so I can’t wait for much longer for you to be ready to be here for me. We’ve been together for five years and I do understand that all of this is scary. It makes me nervous to think about the future, about our being together and tying the knot, but I also feel strongly that “old age is just around the bend” so there isn’t a better time than now. It sounds dramatic coming from someone who literally just turned 20 last week, but I see my parents and my older sister and her family and my brother’s life and it this life thing goes by fast. I want to include you in this.

One thing I see about my sister’s life that I’m actually really looking forward to, outside of having children running around and raising them to be awesome, cool people is that “I can’t wait to go grey.” It’s silly, but at that point we can start dyeing each others hair means it will be another thing to learn about one another. You’ve always wanted to see me with red hair. The color would be brilliant at that point. I know this is beside the point, and you are so nervous about the future, but what do you say? Will you take part in it with me?

It is a lot to ask. We both luckily got into the same college, you have a lit internship, and I have a 4.0 so there’s a lot in front of us. Neither of us can predict the future. I’d be willing to compromise on jobs and moving. You mentioned once that you might want to see what other types of girls are out there. I won’t lie. I do sometimes “sit and wonder of every love that could” be, but I don’t want to explore anyone else. You’ve always been the one for me. I’m hoping you feel the same and that through all of this I have “thought of something charming to say” to make you stay.

Sincerely,
Your Love
